Waste management

Waste management in Laitila is governed by the Waste Act and the municipality’s waste management regulations. The regulations guide waste management according to the principle of sustainable development, so that the amount of waste is reduced and as much of it as possible is recycled. The sorting of recyclable waste saves the environment and natural resources. Valuable raw materials can be reused and the use of new raw materials is reduced. Waste management is important issue to the municipality of Laitila.

The city of Laitila has a contract-based waste collection system, meaning every owner of a residential property signs a contract with a waste management company.

Basic charge for waste management


In 2013, Laitila introduced an eco-fee, which from 2022 will be called the basic waste management fee. The charge will be levied on all residential and leisure properties. According to Section 78 of the Waste Act, the municipality must charge a waste fee for the waste management services it organises in accordance with the Waste Act to cover the costs it incurs in carrying out its tasks. In Laitila, the basic charge for waste management covers, for example, the costs of maintaining the collection points for commercial waste, the collection of hazardous waste and commercial waste, waste advice and the maintenance of a waste register.

Composting

According to Section 41(a) of the Waste Act, the waste holder must provide information on the small-scale treatment of bio-waste on the property to the municipal waste management authority. When the treatment of bio-waste on the property ceases, the waste holder must inform the municipal waste management authority. The municipal waste management authority shall enter the information in the register provided for in Article 143. The personal data entered in the register shall be kept for five years after notification of the end of treatment. Composting of garden waste does not have to be notified.
